Description

From the mid-19th century, cutlers in the Basque Country and Béarn also made walking sticks and makhilas.

Among them, Isaac Bordabehere in Saint Palais, Germain Labarthe in Salies de Béarn and Jean Dufourcq in Saint Jean de Luz.

These canes were often made of chestnut wood, strong and very light, and their makhilas were made of scarified medlar.

Chestnut is a light and flexible wood, very resistant to weathering and will last for many years. For our Terre de Bergers walking stick, we have preserved its natural texture and color, making it comfortable and ideal for long walks or easy strolls.

Chestnut wood is best cut in winter, when the trees are still dormant. It is a renewable and environmentally friendly resource that does not require chemical treatment to protect it, which is good for both health and the environment.

Its total height is initially 135 cm. This relatively tall pole allowed shepherds and shepherdesses to stand on it to keep an eye on the flock. That is why we manufacture it at this original and traditional height. But it can also be manufactured at smaller heights to suit your needs (100 cm, 120 cm).

Our model has a braided leather strap for a good grip. At the end it has a galvanized metal tip with a spike to facilitate the passage on all types of terrain, in the countryside or in the mountains, and to protect the end of the pole from any breakage caused by stones. The old-fashioned rivets are nailed into the wood in the same way as on traditional Pyrenean shepherd’s sticks.

A red wooden knob, one of the colors of the Basque flag, made in our workshop, adorns the top of the stick. It is a comfortable support that will fit in the palm of your hand. We can engrave it with different symbols, such as the Basque cross, Occitan cross, scallop shell, initials, coat of arms, wild boar, woodcock, etc.

Whether in summer or winter, our Terre de Bergers walking stick will accompany you on all the paths you take, whether it is to Compostela or for a short walk in the open air. Walking is a pleasure that brings numerous benefits for your physical health (muscular reinforcement, reduction of cardiovascular risk, maintenance of a stable weight, reduction of blood pressure) and mental health (improvement of mood, reduction of stress).

Each walking stick comes in a handmade fabric sheath with a retractable ergonomic rubber tip.

Hiking is the path to freedom!
