L'atelier

L'atelier de "Couteau Basque"

The workshop, bordered by the small Atchinetche canal, is located opposite the Adour river on the border between Anglet and Bayonne. This former building, located in the Jorlis industrial zone, housed a boilermaker’s forge in the 1930s.

Handcrafted

Séverine and Christophe make traditional Pyrenean and Basque two-nail knives. Their handles are made from local horn and wood. The two craftsmen also use exotic materials such as snakewood and mammoth ivory. Carbon steel blades and damascus blades are hand-forged in the workshop, while stainless steel blades are prepared in Thiers in the Puy-de-Dôme region, the cutlery capital of France.

Des couteaux du Pays Basque

These two cutlers, Artisans d’Art, make several models: The Couteau de berger (shepherd’s knife), whose blade contour is derived from wool shearing scissors, the Couteau Basque (Basque knife), whose shape dates from 1722 and evokes a discoidal stele, the Couteau Makila (Makila knife), echoing the elegance of the Basque stick, and the couteau d’Espelette (Espelette knife), dating from 1871… All are engraved with a symbol: the Basque cross (Lauburu) or ancient Basque emblems. Each knife is crafted and assembled with care and passion, giving it a unique character.
