Since the 1990s, Christophe Lauduique, a seasoned collector, has traveled the roads of France to find the folding knives of our fathers and grandfathers.
A cutler by passion, descended from Michel Tissot rémouleur in 1828, he is now an Artisan coutelier, companion of the Confrérie du couteau de Thiers and Artisan d’Art des Pyrénées-Atlantiques. He has published two books that have become reference works for all lovers of fine blades: “Couteaux pliants de nos provinces” tome 1 and tome 2. In these two books, he presents some 300 knives, past and present. With his friend Pierre-Yves Javel, he collaborated on “L’Almanach du Couteau”.
Christophe founded the Atelier du Couteau Basque in 2004, and makes pocket knives, some of which are based on the Pyrenean and Basque two-nail folding system used by peasants and shepherds in the past.
The handles are engraved with various symbols of Labourd, Basse-Navarre and Soule, the three provinces of the Northern Basque Country. Christophe invites visitors interested in his work to choose their handle, blade and engraving, making each knife unique.
Séverine works in the Couteau Basque workshop alongside Christophe, assisting him with daily knife-making tasks such as shaping horn and wooden handles, blade assembly, sales, etc.
Passionate and dynamic, attentive and warm-hearted, this cutler brings a feminine touch to her creations and to welcoming an ever-growing clientele.
Séverine will be happy to answer your questions and explain how the knives are made, as well as their history….
