From the mid-19th century onward, cutlers of the Basque Country and Béarn also produced walking sticks and makilas.
Among them were Isaac Bordabehere in Saint-Palais, Germain Labarthe in Salies-de-Béarn, and Jean Dufourcq in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
These walking sticks were often crafted from chestnut wood, a material both robust and very light, while their makilas were traditionally made from scarified medlar wood.
Chestnut wood is light, flexible, and highly resistant to weathering, making it extremely durable over time. For our “Terre de Bergers” walking stick, the wood is debarked and waxed, providing comfort and making it ideal for long hikes as well as simple walks.
Chestnut wood is preferably cut in winter, when the trees are still dormant. It is a renewable and ecological resource that requires no chemical treatment for protection, which is beneficial both for health and for the environment.
The original total height of the stick is 135 cm. Relatively tall, it allowed shepherds to lean on it while standing, in order to watch over their flocks.
Choosing the right height
To help you select your walking stick, here is a simple guideline:
-
A person measuring 145–164 cm will be comfortable with a 100 cm stick
-
165–170 cm → 110 cm
-
171–176 cm → 120 cm
-
177–185 cm → 130 cm
-
185–195 cm → 135 cm
Our model features a braided leather wrist strap for a secure grip.
A galvanized metal ferrule with spike is fitted to the end to facilitate walking on all types of terrain—countryside or mountain—and to protect the stick from damage caused by stones.
Traditional-style rivets are hammered into the wood, just as on historic Pyrenean shepherds’ sticks.
A wood and bone pommel, shaped in our workshop, crowns the top of the stick. It provides a comfortable support that naturally fits the palm of the hand. We can engrave it with various symbols: Basque cross, Occitan cross, scallop shell of Saint James, initials, coat of arms, wild boar, woodcock, and more.
Summer or winter, the Terre de Bergers walking stick will accompany you on every path—whether on the road to Santiago de Compostela or during a short walk in the fresh air. Walking is a pleasure that offers many physical benefits (muscle strengthening, reduced cardiovascular risk, weight control, lower blood pressure) as well as mental benefits (improved mood, reduced stress).
Each stick is delivered with a handcrafted fabric sleeve and a removable ergonomic rubber tip.
PLEASE INDICATE WHEN ORDERING YOUR CHOICE OF POMMEL ENGRAVING AND THE DESIRED HEIGHT OF YOUR STICK.
